Beauty is in the beheld eye of a 16-year-old boy in Yerevan. In this highly magnified view of his iris’s surface architecture, the central black pool is the pupil, and his lashes are reflected by the cornea. His eyelids appear as pink rims at top and bottom.Mo, the Oregon Zoo's baby river otter, is seen being held by a zoo employee on March 15, 2013. It was born on Jan. 28. (Oregon Zoo/Facebook) Each year, zoos from around the world celebrate the arrival of their baby animals. From adorable lion cubs to infant monkeys, zoo babies can warm any person's heart.

The most recent zoo baby is a river otter pup named Molalla -- Mo for short -- after the Oregon river.

Mo was born on Jan. 28 weighing just over 4 ounces, becoming the first river otter born at the Oregon Zoo. Mo’s mother Tilly, named after the Tillamook River, has been caring for Mo in a private off-exhibit den, where she will eventually teach Mo how to swim, according to the zoo. In the mean time, keepers are working on "baby proofing" the waters of the Great Northwest exhibit, where she'll spend most of her time.

"We give her access to the exhibit during the day," Julie Christie, senior keeper for the zoo's North America area, said on their website. "But Tilly's been very attentive and doesn't spend too long away from Mo. We're pretty sure the pup's a male, but we can't be positive until our vets conduct a more thorough exam."

The North American river otter is thriving in the Pacific Northwest, due to the decline of fur poachers and healthy river systems. According to Oregon Zoo officials, river otters are also rare to the region due to water pollution and habitat instability.Nelson, a baby kea parrot at Bergzoo in Germany, was called the “ugliest bird in the world” when he hatched in April. Zookeepers said poor Nelson would grow out of his awkward looks.his was a big year for cute animals. Zoos in every corner of the planet saw adorable additions, and it's only fitting that we take a look back at all the critters that captured the hearts of people everywhere and spurred audible awwws. From meerkat triplets and African porcupines to "little" giraffes and panda cubs, the most squeal-inducing animal babies are included in this gallery. And yes, even baby rhinos are cute. Just check it out and see for yourself. Also, see more pictures of these zoo babies via the links below. On April 24, an octet of Artic Fox cubs was born at Mulhouse Zoo in France. While eight pups might seem like a lot, it isn't unusual for this species: Arctic Foxes may give birth to up to 20 offspring! However, they may only be able to raise two to four of their many cubs successfully in the wild, depending on the availability of prey. The parents are also new arrivals at the zoo. Five-year-old mom Huslia and two-year-old father Koltik arrived from the Netherlands in March. The whole family can be seen in the zoo's new polar exhibit, which will soon house a family of Grey Owls and eventually, Polar Bears. (Not in the same enclosure, of course!) Arctic Foxes have extremely dense, warm fur that changes color seasonally, allowing Arctic Foxes to camouflage against in a changing environment. During the winter, their fur is completely snow-white. Arctic Foxes hunt lemmings and other small prey, and have been known to follow Polar Bears for scraps of seal flesh.

Historically overexploited for their fur, Arctic Foxes are currently protected in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Because they are now common and populations seem to be stable, Arctic Foxes are a species of Least Concern on the Red List of Threatened Species maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. However, global climate change is a cause for concern. Closely adaptated to the extremes of the tundra, Arctic Foxes are one of few arctic animals that truly cannot survive in any other environment. This new Dingo pup is only one of the baby animals born and bred at Secret Creek Sanctuary, part of the Australian Ecosystems Foundation, Inc. AEFI is a nationally registered non-profit organization, working to conserve and protect Australian native ecosystems and their biodiversity. Its focus is to save Australia's native animals who are at the most dire edge of extinction.

They aim to do this through the establishment and ongoing management of environmentally and financially sustainable sanctuaries, of which Secret Creek is one. To that end, AEFI manages or assists important habitats spanning over 3000 hectares of land. Additionally, they conduct research along with captive breeding, to improve the future for endangered Australian mammals, birds, and even plants that are nearly extinct. You can check out the diversity of their work on their website as well as their Facebook page.
