Spring Baby Animals Definition

Source(google.com.pk)

Little Mo was just a few months old when poachers killed his mother and stole him from the wild. These ruthless wildlife traffickers wanted to sell the cheetah cub as a ‘pet’ in Somaliland, East Africa (see pic right).

The illegal trade in wild animals is a big business and a big problem. This brutal industry is estimated to be worth billions of pounds each year, third only in value to weapons and drug trafficking.

And it's not just cheetahs. Terrs and Tuffa were so young when their mother was killed and they were put on sale, they still had their eyes shut. These brothers are caracals, rare and beautiful lynx-like wild cats, with reddish-brown fur and black ear tufts (see pic).

And still more. Ajee and Shalla are feisty young serval kittens - slender, spotted wild cats which have become increasingly threatened. The siblings were just weeks old when a farmer disturbed their mother and they were separated from her. Unless rescued, this brother and sister could have been sold as pets.
The trade in wild-caught animals as exotic pets is devastating. At the heart of this is the petrified orphan, stolen from the wild, bewildered and traumatised. The suffering is immense. Wild animals are extremely difficult to look after and never make good pets. For every ONE wild animal captured and sold as a pet it’s estimated that up to FIFTY are killed or die in transit. And 70% of wild pets will die in the first six weeks.

But it's not just the trade in pets that is an issue. And it's not just the welfare of individuals that is at stake. The illegal trade in wildlife is a serious conservation problem too. It threatens the very survival of some of the world's rarest species.

Every year cold-blooded wildlife criminals gun down up to 38,000 terrified elephants and hack off their tusks with chainsaws and axes. That's more than 100 elephants killed every day, or four every hour. And every year, hundreds of chimpanzees are illegally killed for the commercial 'bushmeat' trade and for traditional medicines. Entire families of this intelligent, complex species are hunted, killed and eaten on a daily basis, their distressed babies sold as pets. Meanwhile in Asia the tiger could be about to disappear from some jungles forever. They have no defence against well-armed poachers and their guns, snares and poison. Tigers are skinned for fur, and dismembered for bones and other body parts.

I expect like me you feel a little overwhelmed by such sickening cruelty and callous contempt for living beings. The illegal trade in wild animals is a mind-blowing, all engulfing issue. But Born Free is determined. We will take action on every front for wild animals. Please, help us to help them.

Your donation will have a massive, positive impact. We must protect wild elephants, chimps and tigers. We need to support wildlife rangers, crack down on armed poachers, investigate the illegal trade, infiltrate trading gangs and arrest dealers. Our report explains more, but be warned, it also contains some disturbing images.

And Born Free never forgets the individual. With your help we must rescue orphans and look after them. We need to give life-saving medicines, good food, a proper home, and the love they crave. Your donation will help us care for Little Mo the cheetah cub, Terrs and Tuffa the caracal kittens, Ajee and Shalla the little servals, and many more. See our wish list below and the report for details.

This New Year, Born Free is determined to lead the way towards a better future for wild animals. As 2013 dawns, will you help us clamp down on the cruel and destructive wildlife trade and make the world a much more compassionate place?

Thank you

Will Travers OBE
Chief Executive
