A Lowland gorilla is also pictured cradling her baby in Cameroon while a Northern Sea Otter carries her cub through rough waters in Alaska.
And with animals from penguins to pandas showing love for their offspring, it won't just be humans getting spoiled this Sunday.Every day is Mother’s Day in the animal kingdom. Animal moms start teaching their young everything they need to know to survive in the wild as soon as they’re born. And there’s a lot to know, as climate change, industrial development and other factors put more and more of our planet’s cutest creatures at risk.
For example, every spring, gray whales swim thousands of miles to return to San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja, Mexico, the world’s last undisturbed gray whale nursery. There, they can give birth and nurse their calves in tranquility. However, the sanctuary is perennially threatened by schemes for industrialization and development that would destroy the whales’ home.
Farther north, our planet’s polar bears face a similar battle, as corporations like Shell continue pushing forward with plans to drill for oil off the coast of the Arctic Refuge, the polar bear’s favorite onshore birthing ground. To boot, rising temperatures are causing the bear’s fragile arctic home to literally melt away under its feet. Scientists estimate that nearly all of the polar bear’s summer sea ice could vanish by 2040. Without it, the polar bear cannot survive.
