The first Baby Animals album in 20 years is largely shaped by the marriage break-up of singer Suze DeMarchi.

The Australian rock singer's separation from Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt in 2009 offered plenty of ammunition to load into her songs.

"The break-up was a very difficult time and it was inevitable that some of that would end up on the record," DeMarchi says.

"Relationships are always good writing fodder and I write about what's going on in my life. The record was a great way of distracting myself from what was happening between us."

Traces of heartbreak can be found throughout This Is Not The End, the first set of original Baby Animals songs since 1993's Shaved And Dangerous.

The opening track Email is the most obvious nod to marital miscommunication.

"It's about someone putting down their intentions on email instead of meeting you face to face," says DeMarchi. "It's saying `c'mon let's deal with this in person'."

That track aside, DeMarche will leave listeners to make up their own mind about exact meanings. The mother-of-two would prefer fans to apply her songs to their own lives.

"I tend to write songs in the moment and by the time you actually get to perform that song live the meaning can vary," she says.

"So I think it's nice for people to put themselves into a song and take whatever they want because if the sentiment of a song works for you then that's great."

The Baby Animals redefined Australian rock in the 1990s, releasing blistering hits in Early Warning, Rush You and Painless and holding a 12-year Australian record for the longest running No.1 debut.

They attracted a following in the US and toured with the likes of Van Halen, The Black Crowes, Robert Plant and Bryan Adams before splitting in 1996.

The band reunited in 2008, initially recording an acoustic album of old hits, but their comeback tour was marred by inner conflicts resulting in the departure of rhythm section Eddie Parise and Frank Celenza and the addition of drummer Mick Skelton and bass player Dario Bortolin.

"We had a lot of creative differences and at our age you can't afford for life in a band to be a headache," DeMarchi explains.

"The new guys have been a breath of fresh air and both have fitted in perfectly."

Once burned by a record company impasse, when their label didn't have the funds or distribution lines to market their second record, The Baby Animals have opted to release new music independently.

They have connected with their original fans and a new generation through Facebook and are confident they can go it alone on future releases.

"Social media has given bands so much more control so we've financed the record ourselves and made every decision ourselves," says DeMarchi.

"But we've got a great team around us of friends and people in the industry so we're certainly not doing it alone."

For DeMarche the most important person to have around is the band's founding guitarist and co-writer Dave Leslie.

She calls her eldest Baby Animal "the bright right to my right" and through their battles with break-ups to drug problems, the pair have been a solid partnership, supporting each other still.

"Musicians are really fragile people because they allow themselves to be exposed," says DeMarchi.

"So I love being back in a group because you have that support system and the people to ground you."
