When it comes to baby names, parents now believe the old ones are the best…

Monikers such as Stanley and Mabel are making a comeback, along with the likes of Grace and Ava, a study has revealed.

The trend may have been sparked by celebrities, after singer Dido named her son Stanley, now 19 months, Bruce Willis called his one-year-old daughter Mabel and Lily Allen went for traditional Ethel for her recent arrival.

And names from the 1950s, such as Carol, Beryl, Paul and David are poised to reappear on birth certificates too, after falling out of favour during the 1980s.

Four out of 10 parents are giving their kids retro names in a backlash against once trendy ones such as Kylie, Phoenix and Chantelle, according to the survey by parenting forum netmums.com.

Wayne and Coleen Rooney have also sparked a trend – giving siblings names starting with the same letter, as in Kai and Klay.

One in eight families are following their lead.

One in 12 couples name their child after a colour such as Blue, Red or Grey and one in 50 think an animal name like Tiger or Bear will make their little ones stand out from the crowd.

But while Kanye West and Kim Kardashian named their baby girl North West, the research found more than one in 10 parents who pick a quirky name regret it.

Many fear their youngster will later be subjected to ridicule in the playground.

One in five parents wrestling with two names, go for double-barrelled one with Georgia-Mae and Taylor-Rose the most popular choices for girls.

Ocean, Reef, Clavier and Laarn were the most unusual names given to boys and Rimini, Zuanna, Orchid and Stargazer for girls, the study found. Jayden and Chantelle were voted the least-liked ones.

The way things are going, Stanley and Mabel could oust trendier names such as Amelia and Harry, which are the most popular, the Office for National Statistics revealed.

Netmums founder Siobhan Freegard said: “What’s in a name? An awful lot. It’s something you carry through life and although it’s a private choice for parents, everyone has an opinion on it.

“While celebrities are responsible for some of the wilder names over the years, ordinary parents are now more than making up for lost time, with monikers which even the starriest A-lister would shy away from.

“Fashionable or wacky names are only going to get more common in the playground.”
